In the Appalachian region of southeastern Ohio, winters are dreary and gray, Even with the occational snow storm, southern Ohio never had much white snow sticking to the ground. Instead, you see patches of brown, low places with lots of fog, and because everyone in the countryside warmed their home burning coal, the acrid smell of burning coal permeated the air, leaving a gray lingering smog over much of the region.
